Blastomussa Wellsi

Blastomussa wellsi is a popular large-polyp stony (LPS) coral prized in reef aquariums for its fleshy polyps, vibrant coloration, and relatively peaceful temperament.

Blastomussa wellsi forms colonies made up of individual round polyps that grow from a shared calcium carbonate skeleton. Each polyp is thick and inflated, often resembling a cluster of small fleshy bubbles or open flowers. Polyps can range from about 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) in diameter, giving the colony a bold, textured appearance compared to many other LPS corals.

This coral is known for its wide range of colors, including deep red, burgundy, green, purple, orange, and bi-color combinations. Many specimens display contrasting centers or rings that become more pronounced under reef lighting, making them highly attractive centerpiece corals.

In aquariums, Blastomussa wellsi prefers low to moderate lighting and gentle water flow. Too much light or strong current can cause the polyps to remain retracted. When placed in comfortable conditions, the polyps inflate fully and show their best coloration.

The coral feeds both through photosynthesis from symbiotic zooxanthellae and by capturing small foods such as reef plankton, mysis shrimp, or finely chopped seafood. Occasional target feeding can encourage faster growth and fuller polyp expansion.

Blastomussa wellsi grows by budding new polyps from its skeleton, gradually forming dense clusters over time. It is generally considered a peaceful coral, with short sweeper tentacles, making it suitable for mixed reef aquariums when given a bit of space from more aggressive species.

Because of its striking colors, fleshy appearance, and manageable care requirements, Blastomussa wellsi remains a favorite among reef keepers looking to add color and movement to their coral collections.
