2 Color Jaw Breaker Mushroom  (Discosoma sp.)

The Jawbreaker mushroom coral is a rare and highly sought-after variety of mushroom coral in the genus Discosoma. It is popular in reef aquariums because of its bright orange base color that gradually develops multiple vibrant colors as it grows.

Appearance

• Shape: Round, flat disk with a slightly rippled surface and a central mouth

• Base color: Usually bright orange

• Color development: Over time it forms red, yellow, green, purple, or white streaks and spots

• Texture: Smooth to slightly bumpy with small vesicles

• Size: Typically grows 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) across in aquariums

Unique Feature

The coral gets its name because its changing colors resemble a multi-colored jawbreaker candy. As the coral matures, it develops random speckles and streaks, and no two specimens look exactly the same.

Habitat & Placement (Aquariums)

• Lighting: Low to moderate light

• Water flow: Low to moderate flow

• Placement: Usually placed on rock islands or low areas of a reef tank

Growth

• Reproduces by splitting or dropping small clones (“baby mushrooms”)

• Growth is slow, which is one reason it can be expensive and collectible among reef hobbyists.
